“The message is threefold: to validate the community’s anger around the blatant murder of this young man, to spark a discussion and deeper analysis of what police are there to do beyond just enforcing the law, and to get folks to think strategically about how they want to react to this verdict, whatever it ends up being.”

SF/NY based XLR8R has been a leading progressive indie culture magazine since the early 1990s. With that said, it's an honor to see DaVinci featured in the AudioFile section of their May/June 2010 issue.
Cop at your local newsstand. (You can also read it online here.)

From SF Weekly:
Keelay's beats first came to fruition during the era of hyphy hype, but his sound has progressed since then. His 2009 album with MC Zaire, Ridin' High, showcased a soulful signature sound slicker than the usual indie-rap beats, with songs that boomed with the professional weight of something that might emerge from Dr. Dre's stable. But as expansive as Keelay's output is, his roots are firmly grass level: Next up for 2010 is the Good Grillade Project, a collaboration with local live backing band the Park and Ragen Fykes (a singer who has described herself as "Dolly Parton meets Kool Moe Dee"), and then an EP with Sacramento's Lee Bannon. As the year unfolds, Keelay is set to prove that staying indie doesn't mean skimping on quality.

The B.U.M.S. (Brothas Unda Madness) was a mid-90's rap duo out of Oakland. There's a lot of Bay Area hip-hop from that era that gets overlooked these days for whatever reason, but best believe the Bay goes way beyond hyphy.
The group was short lived, but rappers Evocalist & D.Wyze had buzz locally and nationally, thanks in large part to their deal with Priority Records and support from The Wake Up Show (another Bay Area birthed institution for those of you who have been living under a rock).
Here's the video for Take A Look Around (prod. by Fredwreck) off of their 1995 album, Lyfe 'N' Tyme.
